If you’ve been weaving for a while, you’ve probably got a stash of reed pieces in varying lengths — too short for a full basket, too nice to toss away. I like to think of them as opportunities waiting to be woven!
This month, let’s turn those “bits and bobs” into beautiful, useful creations. I’ll share a few of my favorite mini projects, plus some tips for organizing your leftovers so they’re ready when inspiration strikes.
1. Small Round Reed Baskets
Perfect for holding jewelry, paperclips, sewing notions, or even wrapped candies, these little baskets are quick to weave and make thoughtful gifts.
Tip: Mix and match different reed colors for a charming, patchwork look.

2. Woven Star Ornaments

Short pieces of round reed are perfect for weaving stars — they’re quick, festive, and can be decorated for any season.

3. Round Trip-Style Basket

If you enjoyed my Round Trip Kit, you already know how satisfying it is to use shorter lengths creatively. The staggered colors and textures give each basket a one-of-a-kind personality.
Good news: The kit is still available if you want a ready-to-go bundle with all the materials cut for you.
Organizing Your Leftovers
A few tips to keep your stash inspiring instead of overwhelming:
- Sort by material type and thickness.
- Keep shorter lengths together in a basket (of course!) so you can find them easily.
- Store in a dry, cool spot away from direct sunlight to prevent brittleness.
Weaving Inspiration at Your Fingertips
If you’re a visual learner like me, sometimes you just need to see the steps in action. My YouTube channel is full of demos — from twill patterns to rim finishes — that can help you turn even the tiniest reed scraps into something wonderful.
