For as long as many of us can remember, Easter baskets have been a reliable part of the holiday. While the contents of our baskets may have changed over time, the tradition remains—and for some, those memories are especially special. The Origins of Easter Baskets

Easter baskets (known as Osterkorbe in Germany) were first introduced to Americans by German immigrants in the 1700s. Traditionally filled with various treats such as eggs, candy and other edible treats, these baskets were a way to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and symbolized new life and new beginnings.

The Evolution of Easter Baskets Over Time

Today, some families still use traditional wicker or woven baskets to fill with goodies; however, plastic buckets shaped like animals or characters from popular movies have become increasingly popular too. Additionally, candy has been replaced with more health-conscious snacks such as yogurt-covered raisins and granola bars. This shift reflects modern society’s greater focus on healthy eating habits which has become increasingly important for parents when it comes to filling their children’s Easter baskets. In addition to food items, many parents now opt for non-edible goodies such as books, coloring supplies and even toys instead of filling their child’s basket with only sweets. As a result, these Easter baskets have become much more meaningful gifts than they used to be—a trend that continues today!
