This October, I had the pleasure of attending and teaching at the Association of Michigan Basketmakers (AMB) Conference, held from October 16–20. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Michigan’s fall season, the event was as enriching as it was inspiring, bringing together passionate basketmakers from across the region to celebrate the art of weaving. As always, the conference offered so much more than just classes; it was a gathering of a vibrant community dedicated to preserving and innovating the age-old craft of basket weaving.

Teaching “Seven Sisters,” “Fall Sunset,” and “The Equalizer”

During the conference, I had the opportunity to teach three unique basket designs: Seven Sisters, Fall Sunset, and The Equalizer. Each of these projects was a testament to the versatility and creativity inherent in basket weaving:

Seven Sisters

This design was inspired by the connections of family and strength that come from weaving together, mirroring the community we share as basketmakers.

Fall Sunset

With colors and tones that celebrate the autumn season, this basket’s weave reflects the warmth and beauty of Michigan’s fall landscapes.

The Equalizer

This pattern challenged students to explore balance and contrast, creating a bold statement through black and natural spoke and weaver placement.

I am incredibly grateful to the enthusiastic students who joined me in each of these classes. Their dedication, questions, and creative spirits brought each design to life in new and exciting ways.

A Shout-Out to the Organizers and Shoppers

An event like this wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and dedication of the organizers, who flawlessly coordinated a fantastic experience for everyone. From registration to setup, every detail was managed with care, allowing both instructors and attendees to focus on creativity and community.

I also want to extend my gratitude to everyone who stopped by to shop. Your support fuels small businesses and independent artists, allowing us to continue sharing our passion. Thank you for purchasing goods and supplies, showing your appreciation for all things woven.  You also support RROKI – Rapture Rehabilitation of Kentucky, Inc. which I donate to from the business.

Spectacular Exhibit Room

One of the standout features of the AMB Conference was the Exhibit Room. Walking through this space, you could see the diversity of styles, techniques, and materials that make basket weaving such an incredibly dynamic art form. Each piece displayed was a testament to the skill, creativity, and dedication of the basketmakers in our community. Kudos to all the artists who showcased their work – your baskets were truly inspiring and reminded us all of the endless possibilities in weaving.

 Save the Date for 2025!

If you missed this year’s event, mark your calendar for next year! The 2025 Association of Michigan Basketmakers Conference will be held from October 15–19 in Port Huron, Michigan. It promises to be another fantastic gathering filled with classes, exhibits, shopping, and plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow basketmakers. I’m already looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new weaving enthusiasts as we continue to share and grow in this incredible art form.

Thank you again to everyone involved in making the 2024 AMB Conference a memorable experience. Here’s to more weaving, learning, and creating together in the years to come!
