This month, I had the marvelous opportunity to dive deep into the world of willow weaving at Shenandoah Creates, a retreat that blends artistic growth with leisure in the most harmonious ways. Under the guidance of Jo Campbell-Amsler, a master willow weaver from Iowa, I, along with other enthusiastic learners, embarked on an immersive journey into the craft of willow baskets.

Learning from a Master

Jo Campbell-Amsler brought with her not only her extensive knowledge of willow weaving but also her passion for the craft. She taught us about the lifecycle of willow—the planting, tending, harvesting, and preparation that precedes the actual weaving. Each step was infused with insights that only a seasoned artisan could offer.  https://willowridgebaskets.com/

Hands-On Creation

Throughout the week, I crafted four distinct willow baskets, each with its unique challenges and charms. The hands-on experience was incredibly fulfilling, allowing me to appreciate the tactile beauty of working with natural materials. The act of weaving, under Jo’s expert guidance, felt both meditative and invigorating, a true testament to the craft’s enduring appeal.

More Than Just Weaving

What set this experience apart was the blend of crafting and recreational activities. Shenandoah Creates proved to be the perfect backdrop for more than just weaving  We indulged in horseback riding through the picturesque trails, relaxed evenings in the hot tub under the stars, and spirited rounds of bingo. Each meal was a feast, prepared with care and shared with joy, enhancing the sense of community among us.

Reflecting on the Experience

As I look back at the week, the joy of learning and creating with like-minded individuals stands out. The serene environment of Shenandoah not only fostered creativity but also allowed us to unwind and connect in meaningful ways. The baskets I brought home are not merely souvenirs; they are tangible memories of a week spent immersed in learning and laughter.

This experience has enriched my practice as a basket maker and inspired me to bring new techniques and stories to my students and the Hoot Basket Gift Club. I look forward to sharing knowledge of willow weaving with others, hoping to ignite in them the same passion I felt during my time at Shenandoah Creates.

This adventure was a reminder of how crafts like willow weaving are more than just art—they are gateways to community, nature, and inner peace.

Happy weaving!
