Weaving Patriotic Stars: A Fun Project for Basket Weavers

As basket weavers, we know how important it is to have intricate weaving skills to create stunning and useful projects. However, sometimes it is fun to step away from traditional techniques and try something new. That’s where paper straw weaving comes in! Earlier this month, we had a Monday Night Meetup where we made patriotic stars from paper straws and twine. The result was a fun, festive, and unique project that is perfect for the upcoming summer holidays.  See video at bottom of article!

Step 1: Gather Supplies

The first step is to gather all the necessary supplies – paper straws, twine, and scissors. You can find paper straws easily at any party supplies store, and they come in a variety of colors and designs. While twine is preferred for this project, you can also use yarn or any other string that you may have handy. Once you have all the supplies, let’s move on to the next step.

Step 2: Cut the Straws

The second step is to cut the paper straws into equal pieces. For our project, we cut each paper straw in half, but you can adjust the size as per your preference. Use a sharp pair of scissors to cut the straws, and make sure they are of the same size to ensure a neat finish.

Step 3: Weave the Straws

The third step is to weave the straws together to create the star. Take five straw pieces and string them on the twine. Tie a knot with both ends.  Take two pieces together and fold down and tuck behind the straw below and take both top point and spread them out. Don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect at first, practice makes perfect!

Step 4: Tie the Twine

The a loop in your twine ends so you can hand your star! You can make as many stars as you want and use them to decorate your home or gift them to your loved ones. You can also experiment with different colors and sizes of paper straws to create unique designs.

Creating woven stars from paper straws is an exciting project that all basket weavers should try at least once. It’s an excellent way to improve your weaving skills and have fun with your friends and family. Plus, you can create beautiful decorations that will be admired by all. I hope this blog post has inspired you to try this DIY project and explore your creativity. So, get your supplies ready and start weaving!
