Overview of Shenandoah Creates and Anne Bowers:

As an avid basket weaver, I am always on the lookout for new techniques and materials to incorporate into my creations. So when I learned about the immersive week at Shenandoah Creates with renowned basket weaver Anne Bowers, I knew I had to sign up again!  Little did I know that my experience would exceed all expectations and leave me with not only new knowledge but also unforgettable memories. For those unfamiliar with Shenandoah CREATES, they develop workshops and other activities that foster creativity a nd artistic expression. Programs conducted in this rural Virginia valley connect artists and inspire community. It is a retreat center in Virginia that offers immersive workshops in a variety of disciplines, including painting and, of course, basket weaving. Anne Bowers, our instructor for the week, is a master basket weaver known for her work with rib baskets.  Rib baskets are unique in that they incorporate structural elements (called “ribs”) to create a lighter and sturdier basket. These baskets have been used for centuries and are still highly valued today for their beauty and functionality.

The program itself was a truly immersive experience. We spent our days learning from Anne and the other experienced basket weavers in the program, exploring the beautiful surroundings of the horse ranch (more on that later!), and practicing our basket-weaving skills. From troubleshooting tricky rib placement to experimenting with different materials, there was never a dull moment.

The Horse Ranch Experience:

Speaking of never a dull moment, one particularly memorable experience was my visit to the horses. Riversbend Ranch was a beautiful and serene setting to explore and weave in. I was lucky enough to go on a ride one day on a horse named Patrick, who was as gentle as he was majestic. It was the perfect way to switch up the pace after a long day of weaving, and I returned to the weaving pavilion feeling refreshed and energized.

Meeting Amazing Basket Weavers:

Of course, one of the highlights of the program was the opportunity to learn from Anne and be around other talented basket weavers in the program. Everyone came from different backgrounds and skill levels, but we all shared a passion for basket weaving and an eagerness to learn. From swapping tips and tricks to sharing stories about our personal journeys with the craft, the sense of community and support was truly heartwarming. I was particularly inspired by the way that the weavers in the group were able to take the basic rib basket structure and create truly stunning, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Creating Great Baskets:

Of course, we spent the majority of out time actually creating our own rib baskets. Anne led us through the process step by step, from selecting our materials to weaving the intricate ribs and adding the finishing touches. The whole process was simultaneously challenging and rewarding. I loved experimenting with different colors and patterns for my baskets, and seeing how each of our baskets had their own unique personality. By the end of the program, I was so proud of the beautiful rib baskets I had created. As well as my Lighting Biscuit basket!  Look up Fractal burning!

Lessons Learned and Reflections:

Looking back at my experience at Shenandoah Creates, I am struck by how much I learned and grew in just one short week. Not only did I gain new skills that I can apply to my future basket weaving projects, but I also expanded my horizons and connected with a community of like-minded creatives. I left the retreat center feeling inspired, energized, and ready to tackle whatever basket-weaving challenges come my way next.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I cannot recommend Shenandoah Creates enough to anyone who is passionate about basket weaving, or any other creative pursuit for that matter. The beautiful surroundings, talented instructors, and sense of community all made for a truly immersive and unforgettable experience. Even if you’re not a basket weaver yourself, I encourage you to explore similar immersive programs that allow you to explore new hobbies and make new connections. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and happy basket weaving!  Let me know your favorite place to weave!
